This is the first movie I saw at this year's (2010) Chicago International Film Festival. You can't go wrong with festival films, but there's a good chance you'll never see them again. This one was apparently picked up as we watched at the festival and is reportedly expected in some theaters early in 2011. It's kind of an American Graffiti set and filmed in Clawson, a 14-Mile Road suburb of Detroit, but ironically without the car culture of the 1973 George Lucas classic. Unfortunately for the box office the digital Myth of the American Sleepover also lacks the big budget sound track and stunts of a Hollywood production. In other words, it's a coming-of-age story that tests best with middle-agers. These are real kids (played beautifully by real kids) who drink, but their ambition is to kiss and find true love. I can't recall even a reference to drugs. Those middle-age folks could take their Sunday school class. Watch your local listings like a hawk and go the week it plays.
